Surface mining is primarily used in opencast mineral extraction. It replaces traditional blasting in which the mineral and soil layers get all intermixed.

‘Practice makes perfect’ – this proverb applies very much to Simon Group trainees. A team of them recently built a new machine for the final assembly process that will enable the bits used for surface mining to be equipped in future with even higher performance fittings.

They designed and built the machine along with constructor Heiko Friedrichs and training manager Harald Arndt, with close interaction in the process between trainees in the different fields of mechanical engineering, tool-making and mechanical electronics.

The main aim was to transfer the highly successful components of the R generation (rotation) road milling bit, a clamping sleeve system, seamlessly onto the surface mining bit. The greatest hurdle to be overcome here was the assembly of the strong clamping sleeve and the wearing washer. Thanks to the trainees, the assembly is now achieved fully automatically and the machine also has a high capacity.
