Just a few examples of uses for Betek TungStuds

TungStuds – the new all-round anti-wear solution from BETEK

Many machines are subjected to great strains and high levels of wear. Sections of plants where abrasive materials are conveyed or processed are always particularly susceptible to this and the plants also often run non-stop. Without special protection against wear such machines and plant sections can only be operated for short periods. A lack of anti-wear protection can lead to greatly reduced hours of operation, high maintenance costs and even to expensive machine failure. Compared to that the capital expenditure costs for a suitable anti-wear solution are in most cases very modest.
It is clear that a suitable anti-wear solution can substantially improve a plant’s operational reliability and cost-efficiency.
With its new TungStuds range, tungsten carbide tool manufacturer Betek is launching an anti-wear solution that is as simple as it is effective. TungStuds are wear-protection studs with a core of Betek brand-name tungsten carbide, available in a variety of sizes. They can even be easily welded onto unevenly formed metallic surfaces and, if necessary, replaced again and again.
The problem of wear is often countered using aids such as welded reinforcement panels. In the case of applications with a particular susceptibility to wear it pays, however, to use Betek tungsten carbide wear protection as a long-lasting alternative.
That makes Betek TungStuds the ideal solution, including for complex sections of machinery. The possible applications are many and varied:

Possible applications

  • On machines for extracting, handling and working abrasive materials, e.g. gravel, sand, ore, coal etc.
  • On shredders and recycling machines
  • On crushers, grinders and mixers
  • On digger buckets
  • On road headers
  • On augers and bucket drills
  • On surface miners

Benefits for the machine operator

  • Longer machine / plant operating times. The Betek anti-wear solution using TungStuds lasts – varying, dependent on operating conditions - many times longer than traditional solutions
  • Great potential for saving on running, upkeep and maintenance costs
  • Appliances / machines / plants are consequently more economic to run

Tungsten carbide technology

Tungsten carbide is produced from tungsten and cobalt. Tungsten is one of the toughest materials around. However, it is also very brittle. Combined with cobalt a material is produced that is very hard and resistant to wear, while at the same time being ductile enough to also withstand the most extreme of impacts. The tungsten carbide’s quality is always tailored at Betek to the application concerned. This ensures the necessary ductile characteristics while providing optimum resistance to wear. The tungsten carbide with all its excellent properties is created by sintering in an ultra-modern sinter HIP plant. Precise management of the process, for which great experience is required, determines the tools’ quality and durability.

Betek: quality made in Germany

Betek is a global leader in the production of tungsten carbide and special tungsten carbide tipped tools. With its main site near to Schramberg in the Black Forest, Betek evolved in 1981 from the Karl Simon Company, which originally refined modules for the clockmaking industry. Betek enjoyed its first commercial successes with tungsten carbide tools for the mining sector.
Gradually the special tool portfolio was expanded with huge success to cover other industries and sectors as well, e.g. road construction, tunnelling, excavation, foundation drilling, agricultural technology, surface mining, crushing of all kinds, recycling, soil cultivation and biomass production. Also included in the Betek range is a comprehensive array of tungsten carbide in numerous shapes and grades for diverse areas of industrial use. Since 1993, Betek, together with the Simon Company Group, which consists of 7 individual firms, has been owned by Indus Holding AG.
Betek manufactures well over 20 million tools a year – all on leading edge machinery in production facilities covering more than 10,000 square metres. These also include highly up-to-date laboratory and testing facilities. Only the purest of materials are used for the production of the different tungsten carbide grades. Over the last few years, the company has recorded growing global demand for tungsten carbide and tungsten carbide tipped tools. Major projects all over the world, including in China, Australia and the Middle East, guarantee further growth.
